As well as having one of the largest selections of gate designs in the country we can also cater for your own design. This is a service we usually provide for clients who are working in listed buildings, conservation areas or architects and designers.

Types of materials

Gates can be made from many types of timber - see below for examples of the most commonly used.

European Redwood Pine: This is common softwood found throughout Europe. It is not listed in CITES* and for its weight is strong and moderately hard. The timber dries rapidly and without undue degrade. Density is 510kg/m³.

Iroko: This is a lower risk listed (CITES*) hardwood from mainly West Africa. Iroko has excellent strength properties similar to Teak with a density of 660kg/m³. The timber dries well with only a slight tendency to distortion and splitting. It has excellent properties for exterior joinery.

Utile: This hardwood (not listed in CITES*) is available from well managed sources in tropical Africa. It has a density of 660kg/m³ with extremely good strength properties for timber of its weight. It has excellent properties for exterior joinery.

Oak: This is a well know hardwood that as also not listed in CITES (see below) due to its well managed sources. Oak has a density of 720kg/m³ but this can vary by 20%. It has a high strength property but due to it drying slowly it has a tendency to split and crack, particularly in the early stages. As a result more waste is generated in the milling of the timber and is reflected in the cost.

What is CITES?

CITES is the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora. Its aim is to protect certain plants and animals by regulating and monitoring their international trade.

The Global Wildlife Division of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Dafra) is the UK CITES management authority and ensures that the convention is properly implemented.

Treatment

Please note that softwood gates will be supplied clear preservative treated and an additional coat of clear treatment is recommended before finishing with paint or exterior wood protection.

We recommend the use of Sadolin or Cuprinol and used as per manufacturer instructions.

Hardwood gates come untreated and again we recommend the use of Sadolin or Cuprinol and used as per manufacturer instructions.
